Property Tax Reform
Every taxpayer dollar needs to be spent on core services with the purpose to better serve the citizens of Wichita. All budgets have tightened over the past few years. Expenses are rising in all areas. Consideration must be evaluated on needs vs. wants. If it is not a need within the core services, it should be evaluated and possibility eliminated.
Rising costs and rising home valuations equate to higher property taxes. Many people are feeling the squeeze and some are not able to keep their homes. The question is how does the city begin to move away from such a large dependence on property taxes, while still providing core services to the citizens of Wichita. These are discussions that need to take place.
Homelessness
Recent activities with a local company brought in concerns over what a person can do with their own property. As long as the property falls into its zoning laws and restrictions, it should be up to the owner to do as they see fit. This rides a fine line and needs to be addressed. It should be based on facts, not on feelings.
This is a growing problem within the city. Whether it is mental illness, financial stress, or something else, it's an issue the city has to deal with. The city will need to collaborate with outside groups to help fix this problem. This is a tough one but is a growing problem.
Core Services
Core Services are what the public and city need. These services must take priority and be fully funded at all times. Fire, law enforcement, public works, transit, roads, infrastructure, etc. should take priority over non-essential wants.
